She persevered though, writing a more contemporary novel titled Year of Goodbyes, about a young single mother named Arabella who goes home to her small town to look after her ailing mother. She discovered the platform just as the pandemic was hitting, in late 2019, when she wrote a fantasy book about werewolves. I also spoke to an actual, real, human writer on the platform, who goes by the pen name Phoenix. A Case Study in How to Make Money Writing Fiction Any small incentive or reward will help me get my butt in the chair and write my story. ![]() Especially as someone who has learned how to quickly write nonfiction articles, writing fiction does not come easily to me. I just want to be rewarded for writing fiction every day. Sitting down to write the novel is the tough part. (I’m being a little melodramatic, but hey, that’s the writer in me.) As for exclusivity, I am not married to my first novel idea. And the idea of sending out query letters to agents only to get silence or rejection makes me want to perish, cold and alone. I know that for exclusive contracts, writers are offered a higher rate than non-exclusive writers.īut I don’t want to go through the tedious process of learning how to market a book on KDP or do the legwork to understand the Amazon algorithm. Royalty information was tough to find, since it appears to be confidential on the contract you sign. Non-exclusive writers can republish their stories elsewhere, but may not be able to remove their stories in order to be fair to readers who will have paid to access those chapters. Exclusivity means they authorize the platform the rights for distributing and publishing their books exclusively on those platforms. When it comes to rights, authors can pick whether to go non-exclusive or exclusive for a higher-paid rate. In answer: I might make more if I went with KDP, not to mention if I got a book deal with a traditional publisher. So I did a bit of research on the platform and whether it was a little too good to be true. Like any writer online, I’m always a little wary when I’m asked to sign a contract for my writing. (It’s also the one I submitted my sample chapter to!)Īll in all, it seems like a great way to start writing fiction. When I checked out the challenges, I was really pleased to see one specifically about LGBT+ romances in the Stary Writing Academy III, which is something I don’t see enough of in traditional media. ![]() (Or on the computer screen, as the case may be.) It’s a great encouragement to practice your craft and earn some money while you do. It’s just a nice way to incentivize yourself to actually put in the work every day and get the words out on paper. But imagine doing NaNoWriMo and actually getting paid any amount of money when you finish it.
